Vaughn Announces Retirement

Its only a few days till the Ashes start in Sunny Cardiff on 8th July, so it was sad to hear today that Michael Vaughn ex-England captain has announced his retirement.

In a press conference today, Vaughn announced that he was retiring form all forms of the game as he could not play to the high standards he demanded from himself. It is a sad fall from grace for the captain who won England the Ashes in 2005 after 18 years of hurt and this will be his greatest legacy.

An outstanding batsman and captain, it is a big loss for England, although in Strauss England potentially have a more than capable replacement.

Vaughn explained how his form has generally suffered and things really hit home when (a few days ago) he was playing with his three year-old son Archie in his back garden, and Archie promptly bowled his father…that’s when he realized it was time toi hand up his pads and do something else.

So what lies ahead for Vaughn…well his has his own Vaughn cricket coaching school, and he can now devote more time to this. He may fancy a stint in the Sky commentary box, and join other ex-England captains such as Nasser Hussain, Mike Atherton, Ian Botham and David Gower.

So all in all a very sad day as one of England’s best captains and batsman says goodbye to the game he loves and to whom he has given so much. let’s hope we see more of him in other activities and as part of English cricket…. who knows he could be the next England coach!
